I think the vast majority of christians do not comprehend how they daily reject God’s word when they accept anything over and above the word of God. Today in the United States, and in most countries of the world, science is readily and enthusiastically accepted as having more credibility and truth than the Bible. “Science” is accepted without question, accepted instantly, and the credibility of the proponents of pseudoscience and virtually any statements of the secularists is automatically accepted as true and above the Bible without a moment’s pause. This is not only sad, it is deeply and theologically heretical.
Far too many christians today are lackadaisical about God’s word, the Bible, and far too few don’t take the scriptures seriously. It seems the majority just consider the Bible another book that could be wrong about many things, or is outdated or mistranslated. Could it be that from God’s perspective such a person might be found to be a heretic, infidel, miscreant, skeptic, agnostic, atheist, idolater, and unbelieving? If a person rejects God’s word as God’s absolute truth, what would you call such a person?
This could be when a person begins to wax eloquent about the meaning of truth, going on a long labyrinthian explanation that basically denies absolute truth and continues a tiring intellectual harangue on the maturation of the human race and our progress in diversity and cultural inclusion as well as gender identity and expression. Or the more traditional conservative christian might go on a parallel intellectual harangue on the advancements of “science” (by which they actually mean pseudoscience), the “proven math” and the “proven science” of our world and the Universe. Many christians still see no contradiction in rejecting the Big Bang theory or Darwin’s theory of evolution while accepting everything else the “scientific community” (including NASA) promotes as “real and proven science.”
“He loves Thee too little, who loves anything together with Thee, which he loves not for they sake.” St. Augustine
Can we not trust the Bible to be God’s word, unadulterated, accurate, true, and reliable throughout the ages? Let’s turn to a verse in the Bible now:
“For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NASB 2020)
The word of God is not dead. It is living, and it is active. Does anyone seriously think that what God inspired in the Bible would become outdated? Does anyone seriously think God would become irrelevant because of cultural changes over many generations, or that God would become old fashioned like grandparents do according to young people today? The answer is that many christians do believe God is irrelevant today, that he has been outdone by “science” and that “scientists” are telling us the truth that the Bible did not. Even worse than that, most christians today believe “science” and pseudoscience over and above the Bible today.
“As the writer begins, he directly warns that God’s Word is alive, saying: ‘The word of God is living and active’ (v. 12a). It lives because it endures forever (Psalm 119:89). Even more, it lives because it has life in itself. God is living (3:12), and the Word, as God’s breath (2 Timothy 3:16), partakes of God’s living character. It is alive!” (Ken Hughes, Preaching the Word Commentary)
So will My word be which goes out of My mouth;
It will not return to Me empty,
Without accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 (NASB 2020)
When we realize that God and his word cannot be separated, we begin to grasp the power of the Bible, and the reality that his word as expressed in the Bible cannot be divided. God is True, and so his word is True, and it can never be untrue. It can never be inconsistent with the truth, and it can never be a lie. So anything that contradicts God’s word, whether it be so-called “science” or math or philosophy or theology, must itself be false.
It is impossible for the word of God to be outdated by time or events or culture, or even the second law of thermodynamics. We know that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
And we know that God describes himself in this way: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Rev. 1:8
And so when we read the story of God’s creation of the “heaven and earth” we cannot and must not disregard the Bible’s Genesis description of the creation of the earth. And yet most christians do, because by believing NASA’s version, or the so-called “scientific” version, you must of necessity disregard the Genesis version for truth and accuracy.
Thank about that for a while, and then go back and re-read Genesis. It’s a little like taking the red pill.
