How does God describe the creation of the earth? When you read all the verses and put the whole story together, it is nothing less than astonishing! Here is what we learn directly from creation verses in the Old and New Testaments:
- God placed the earth and it hangs on nothing;
- The earth has a foundation;
- The earth never ever moves;
- The earth sits on pillars;
- The earth has four corners;
- The earth has a cornerstone;
- The earth has ends;
- The earth is a circle (and a circle is not a sphere);
- The firmament is a hardened substance;
- The firmament is above the earth;
- The sun and stars are under the firmament;
- The earth’s atmosphere is contained within the firmament;
- God’s throne sits on the firmament;
- God created the earth, but the earth is not a planet; and
- The sun rises and hurries back to its place, not the earth.
What you do with these verses is going to be up to you. I do not tell you what you must believe, but if you are a genuine Christian, you are either going to have to believe these verses, or make excuses as to why God did not mean what he wrote.
There’s an important concept that plays out here. In the law we have a concept called “cumulative evidence.” The idea is that if all you have is one or two pieces of evidence, trying to pull together enough proof to draw a conclusion may not be persuasive under the burden of proof required. But if you have a lot of pieces of evidence, the cumulative impact of all of the evidence may be more than persuasive to meet the burden of proof. Keep that in mind, because I have not pulled one or two verses out of the scriptures to strain to arrive at a conclusion.
On the contrary, there are dozens of verses that cumulatively and consistently state that the earth is exactly where God placed it, that the earth never moves, that it is set on pillars, that there are four corners, and that there is a hard firmament above the earth upon which sits the throne of God.
To believe the heliocentric model of the Universe, you would have to somehow be able to intellectually and spiritually take all these verses that God put in the Bible and either say they do not mean what they say, or you would have to perform some incredible intellectual gymnastics to come up with symbolic, allegorical, metaphorical, or poetic interpretations that deny their literal meaning.
To this day, I have never heard a single theologian explain away these verses in support of a heliocentric model.
I have heard many good preachers endorse NASA’s view of the heliocentric world in their sermons, but they never address all the verses in the Bible that clearly oppose the heliocentric model. It’s really quite amazing. Good men will preach how critically important it is to take the Word of God literally and not to inject world views that don’t fit into the Biblical narratives, and yet in the middle of their sermon they endorse NASA’s anti-God scientific view of the Universe. How does that happen? It happens because these preachers have believed the NASA view since they fell out of their cribs, and it is such a deeply ingrained assumption, they don’t even realize how it has infected their theology like a virus. It’s like their mind is hard wired with a heliocentric architecture.
The creation story is obviously important to God. The first revelation of God to us is in the story of the creation of Heaven and earth. God was pleased when he finished creating the earth. Do you want to be the one to tell God to his face that the earth is not at all like he described in the Bible?
Remember, the entire Bible affirms a non-spherical earth, an earth that God described as a circle, which is not a sphere. A plate is a circle. A basketball is a sphere. The earth in the bible is described as a plain with mountains and valleys and deep oceans.
Don’t underestimate the importance of this subject. What you believe about God’s creation is very important to God! I recommend you get it right. At least make sure you’re not joining Satan and his creation model that is intended to deny that God even exists. Can you imagine what an insult it would be to God if you passionately believed and defended a model created by Satan? May it never be!
I hope and pray our articles, videos, books, and live talks will help you grow in your knowledge of God and as a result that God would open your eyes to the true story of creation.
